As Alan Irvine has stated in his pre-match interview, Wednesday “Desperately needed to bounce back”, and that’s exactly what they did!
Wednesday started off in a positive mood, looking to correct mistakes from last week’s drubbing at Reading and to try beat one of the form teams in the league, Leicester City, who before the game were lying in fifth position. But, as we all know, that Manager Of The Month Is Cursed! February’s winner? Leicester boss Nigel Pearson, maybe we could pick up a win?!
After just a minute, Leon Clarke stung the fingers of keeper Chris Weale, who parried excellently. But just 5 minutes later, a Darren Purse free-kick fell to impressive Tommy Miller who poked the ball to out of form Leon Clarke, who powerfully struck the ball into the top corner from roughly 8 yards out, 1-0 Wednesday and a great start for the Owls!
Leicester keeper Chris Weale had to be taken off after what seemed to be a small cut on his nose, Foxes Boss Nigel Pearson described the injury as being something that an outfield player could have received treatment for pitchside, but as Weale was playing in the net, he had to be taken off.
On the Sheffield Wednesday Official Website this week, goalkeeper Lee Grant stated that he was keen to keep a clean sheet in the encounter with Leicester. Proving that your the best keeper in the league is quite hard, but Wednesday’s keeper took it upon himself to keep Wednesday in the game when Leicester looked like bringing the scores level. Leicester striker Martin Waghorn perfectly volleyed into the bottom corner, but there was Wednesday legend Lee Grant to throw himself across his net to scoop out the ball and tip it round the post for a corner, one of the best saves of the season!
It would stay 1-0 till half time, Wednesday had built on a superb opening goal to get through to the interval.
HALF TIME: SWFC 1-0 Leicester
After the interval, recently concussed Tommy Spurr had left the field to be taken to hospital to be checked over, American Call-Up Frankie Simek replaced the youngster
On 61 minutes, Wednesday broke with Jermaine Johnson on the right wing, he found space and put in an inch perfect cross for Leon Clarke who tapped in from 4 yards out, Wednesday 2-0 up!
Leicester never really looked like getting back into the game until Dyer found space in the box one on one with Wednesday Keeper Lee Grant, Dyer powerfully shot but Grant was up to the task and saved very well, another top class save from the ex-derby man.
That was the last real talking point in the game, although Wednesday did come close with Tommy Miller and Marcus Tudgay near the end.
A good win for Wednesday who are rather unpredictable at the minute, West Brom on tuesday night, will be a massive test, a point would be fantastic there!
